Marketing research started out with researchers heading into homes and sitting down with respondents around their dinner table. Ethnography is all about getting into the world of the respondent. And with online qualitative tools, getting there is easier than ever and allows researchers to overcome the cost and time constraints of traditional field research methods.
What's in the Cupboard?
Applying online platforms to ethnography helps avoid significant levels of intrusion. Some topics of discussion may be potentially sensitive--utilizing online and mobile methods allows for some physical distance between the researcher and respondent, while allowing the respondent to remain comfortable in their own environment. The goal is more natural insight into people's everyday lives.
While I'm Thinking About It...
Mobile and online ethnographic tools allow respondents to capture things in the moment--audio, video, pictures, text--that can be accessed by researchers later. Even without physically being in the environment, researchers can garner "live" insights that enhance the ethnography.
